Smishing

With this technique, they deceive their victims through text messages whose origin appears to be from a legitimate organization, although the reality is that it hides a malicious link that, once the user enters, provides all kinds of information.

According to a BioCatch report, smishing has increased worldwide, with complaints about SMS spam alone increasing by more than 140% last year. Furthermore, this type of fraud is one of those that worries users the most.

Voice scams

Thanks to this technique, it is the victims themselves who offer their data verbally over the phone. To do this, they make the interlocutor believe that it is a call from their bank or another legitimate entity and ask for personal information.

This is a very difficult method to detect. One of the most frequent is authorized automatic payment fraud and it is also important to keep in mind that 35% of voice-spoofing scams involve payments of more than 900 Euros.

Remote access scams

The strategies of financial fraudsters have come a long way, to the point where these types of multi-level hybrid scams go far beyond simply directing a target to complete a transaction.

An example of this is starting the scam as a voice scam but changing tactics and coercing the victim to download an application on their phone, although the reality is that it is software that allows the cybercriminal to gain remote access to your device.

In addition to identifying some of the most recurrent cyberattacks, BioCatch has also analyzed the users most vulnerable to suffering from this type of attack, which mainly depends on four variables: health, vital events, resistance, and capacity.

Elderly users

The main target of financial scams is seniors, as they are a vulnerable demographic. In addition to this, they are less likely to report these types of practices and are not as familiar with new technologies.

Generation Z

Due to social networks, criminals have strengthened their relationship with young people because it is a sector of the population that is looking for easy money and who, on many occasions, are recruited by scammers for banking plans.

Specifically, account holders under 21 years of age who show signs of money mule activity have increased by 78%. In all these cases, regulatory bodies are working on it and have increased pressure to guarantee the greatest safety for the user.
