Zuck’s Metaverse Controversy: Horizon Worlds Access

Mark Zuckerberg changed the name of his company to Meta with the idea of focusing on his virtual and augmented reality products and paving the way to the metaverse. His plans to open Horizon Worlds have more and more detractors; the latest to join criticizes that the platform wants to target minors between 13 and 17 years old.

More than 70 activists have signed a joint letter, led by Fairplay, the Center for Digital Democracy (CDD), and the Center for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH), advocating for the company to stop “putting profits before the rights of children”.

According to the signatories, the metaverse is harmful to adolescents, and, to defend their perspective, they cite research carried out by the CCDH in March. The study concluded that minors who had been seen using Horizon Worlds, which can currently only be used by adults, were exposed to harassment and abuse, including sexual, racist, misogynistic, and homophobic insults.

In addition to the negative impact it could have on the little ones, activists claim that their privacy would be violated. This would occur by collecting biomarkers without consent.

“Meta is making the same mistake with Horizon Worlds that it made with Facebook and Instagram, notes Imran Ahmed, executive director of the Center for Countering Digital Hate, one of the signatories. They have prioritized profits over security in product design.” It should be remembered that Zuckerberg already had legal problems with his similar social networks.

Katharina Kopp, deputy director of the Center for Digital Democracy, believes that, first, Meta “must commit to fully exploring the possible consequences.” Regardless of whether they do it or not, the company seems to continue betting on Horizon Worlds, even though they decided to reduce their involvement recently.
