They dismantle an international drug sales network on the ‘deep web’: 288 people are arrested in three countries

Of the total arrests, 153 correspond to the United States; 55, to the United Kingdom and 52 to Germany.

Police agencies from several American and European countries have dismantled a drug sales network through the deep web that has allowed the arrest of 288 people and the seizure of 850 kilos of narcotics, 117 firearms and 53.4 million dollars (48, 5 million euros) in cash and cryptocurrencies.

The operation is the result of years of investigation to prevent the sale and distribution of fentanyl and similar drugs through the Internet , as highlighted by the US Department of Justice in a statement.

The European police agency, Europol, has also participated in the operation , which dismantled a “monopolistic market” in December 2021, allowing the opening of “hundreds” of criminal investigations. Of the total of 288 arrests, up to 153 correspond to the United States; 55, to the United Kingdom and 52 to Germany , Europol has highlighted.

These types of drug sales structures over the Internet work in a very flexible way, in such a way that as soon as a sales website is detected and closed, another immediately arises to replace it. “It’s like a game of whack-a-mole and we’re hitting as hard as we can,” Attorney General Merrick Garland explained at a press conference.
